How to Choose a Wedding Photographer You Can Trust
Planning your wedding is one of the most exciting times of your life, but it can also feel overwhelming. From choosing your venue and suppliers to organising all the little details, there are so many decisions to make.
Over the last few days, I have had three enquiries from couples who had already booked a photographer, paid a deposit, and then been completely ghosted.
Sadly, by the time they got in touch with me, I was already booked for their wedding dates. Thankfully, I was able to recommend photographers I know and trust, but it genuinely broke my heart that they found themselves in that position.
As a wedding photographer in Stockport, photographing weddings across Manchester, Cheshire, the Peak District and beyond, I wanted to share a few tips to help you choose a photographer you can trust.
Do not Judge a Photographer by Instagram Alone
Instagram is a brilliant place to discover photographers, but remember that it is a highlights reel.
A beautiful feed does not always tell you what a photographer is like to work with or whether they can consistently deliver an entire wedding gallery.
When you are investing in your wedding photography, you are investing in someone who will be with you for much of your wedding day. They need to be someone you trust completely.
Read Genuine Reviews
One of the first things I recommend is reading Google reviews from real couples.
Reviews often tell you far more than photographs ever can. They reveal how a photographer communicates, whether they helped couples feel relaxed, how organised they were, and whether they delivered everything they promised.
Look for comments about reliability, professionalism and the overall experience, not just the photographs themselves.
Ask to See Full Wedding Galleries
Every photographer has favourite images they will share on social media, but your wedding deserves consistency from beginning to end.
Ask to see two or three full wedding galleries. This will give you a much better understanding of how they photograph every part of the day, from getting ready and the ceremony through to speeches, portraits and the evening celebrations.
Arrange a Phone Call or Video Chat
Your wedding photographer is one of the suppliers you will spend the most time with on your wedding day.
That is why I always encourage couples to arrange a phone call or Zoom meeting before booking. It is a chance to ask questions, talk through your plans, and most importantly, see whether you feel comfortable together.
The right photographer should make you feel excited and reassured, never pressured.
Transparency Matters
A professional photographer should be happy to answer your questions, explain their process, share examples of their work and provide clear information about their pricing, contracts and what is included.
If something does not feel right, trust your instincts.
It is About More Than Beautiful Photographs
Of course you want stunning images, but you also want someone who will turn up early, keep your day running smoothly, help you feel relaxed, and be a calm, supportive presence throughout your wedding.
Many of my couples tell me they were nervous about being photographed. My goal is always to help you forget about the camera, enjoy your day and capture genuine moments as they naturally unfold.
Whether You Book Me or Not...
I genuinely want every couple to have an amazing experience.
If I am already booked for your date, I will always do my best to recommend trusted photographers whose work and professionalism I admire. I would much rather help you find the right photographer than hear you have been let down.
