How to get the best out of your couple portraits

My favourite part of the wedding day is the time I get to spend with you alone to take couple portraits. This is the essence of your wedding day. The reason why everyone is here. Your love is the most important part of the day and it is my privilege to photograph that love and capture those feelings of love and romance for you.

One thing that every couple says to me is that their wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye and sometimes having that alone time together while I take your photos is a fantastic opportunity for you to take some time out. How long we spend together is completely up to you, I have some couples who prioritise their portrait session and we spend a lot of time together and then I have other couples who don’t want to take too much time away from their friends and family so we have a quick session.

My ideal scenario for the couple portrait sessions would be two smaller sessions together, one during the day and one during the perfect time of golden hour. This is every photographer’s dream. The time when the sun is setting and the light is low and hits soft and golden and it looks like everything is bathed in a warm, beautiful glow. It is difficult to predict whether there will be a golden hour and also what time it will be so sometimes we just have to go with the flow on the day.

Once we are on our own I just want you to both be you, whether that means you laughing and being goofy or being romantic and touchy feely every couple is different. I am there to observe and give you a little bit of direction. Often I will be a little bit away from you so you get to enjoy some alone time or even just take you for a walk and get photos of you both walking and talking and having fun. If you aren’t completely comfortable in front of the camera I have some tricks up my sleeve to help warm you up and get you relaxed.

The most important thing to remember is that I am there as an observer and whether we have 10 minutes together or an hour together I will be able to get some gorgeous shots of you both enjoying one of the most special days of your life.
