A Wild & Joyful Family Birthday Photoshoot in High Peak, Derbyshire.

This weekend I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Laura’s extended family to celebrate a very special occasion — her mum’s birthday. We met on a fresh spring morning at their Airbnb in High Peak, Derbyshire, one of my favourite locations for relaxed outdoor photography.

With eight adults and eight children aged between newborn and fourteen, the session was wonderfully lively. There were muddy shoes, chocolatey smiles, and plenty of sticks and treasures being proudly shown to me by the younger members of the family.

And honestly, these are the moments I love most.

The Beauty of Relaxed Family Photography

When families imagine a photoshoot, they often picture everyone standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera. But the images that truly matter are usually the ones in between — the laughter, the hugs, the children running freely and the genuine connections between generations.

For me, family photography is about capturing real moments rather than perfect poses.

During this session we photographed a large group portrait with everyone together, followed by grandparents with grandchildren and smaller family groups. Once we had those key images, the rest of the session became about simply enjoying time together in the garden while I documented the natural moments unfolding.

Those relaxed moments often become the photographs families treasure the most.
